My name is Tony Hewitt, Jr. I am 35 years old and was born and raised in Calhoun county, where I still reside. I currently work as a law enforcement officer here in my home county. I enrolled in Jacksonville State University right after high school, where I was pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. I accepted a position as a law enforcement officer in a neighboring city shortly after. So, I put college on hold to attend the Police Academy, where I became a certified officer. After a short time in the field, I moved on to retail sales management. The Recession hit hard and forced me out of the retail field. From there, I worked as a machinist. For the past 6.5 years, I have been back in law enforcement.
I earn the average median income for the state of Alabama. I am not, by any means, wealthy or well-to-do. When I had family health care coverage through my job, it cost at least 20% of my income. My children are covered under Medicaid now, and it has been a saving grace. My parents are currently fighting for their own health care coverage. My father has been working since he was 12 years old and has broken his back twice. They should NOT be fighting for basic health care coverage!
I am just a regular guy, the “average Joe,” the common Alabamian. Like so many others, I am tired of the corruption in our state. It is time that we show the rest of the country what living in the “Bible Belt” really means – loving our neighbor as ourselves. These are a few of the many reasons I want to be your governor. It is time to move this state forward and start taking better care of each other and ourselves.
